2020 Reopening School Plan

2020 Reopening School Plan
Posted on 08/20/2020

Dear Fife Public Schools Community,

Since early August when we learned that we would be starting the 2020-2021 school year remotely, we have been working diligently to collate multiple layers of information that have been gathered, created, adapted and processed to help our school district have a safe reopening. After collaboration and partnership with our teachers, administrators, students, parents and others in the community, we are pleased to share this information with you. Our 2020 Reopening Plan represents the facts and requirements we have before us at this moment. However, because we have been working through a global pandemic since March 2020, we have learned that things can change quickly and that we may need additional solutions to new challenges as we move forward.

Rewinding a bit, we were hopeful in June that our schools would be open to students in September, at least in a modified or hybrid state.  As things developed over the months of July and August, our focus shifted once again to looking at a distance learning model.  We know this is not ideal. But we are committed to the health and safety of our students, staff, and community, and to making our Continuous Learning 2.0 model exponentially better than before, with more structure, more consistency, required daily student attendance, defined grading requirements, more resources for our teachers and parents, and deeper learning across all grade levels.

We are looking forward to the day we can move into our “hybrid” model of learning. We are especially looking forward to getting all of our students back to our classrooms with their teachers and classmates so we can continue the deep and valuable traditions that make Fife Public Schools such a great school district. To do so, we will follow the guidance of Tacoma Pierce County Health Department and use their “Decision Tree” as our framework for getting staff and students together in our classrooms.

Also for students, parents and guardians, your school principals and teachers will be reaching out to you soon with additional information and details about the opening of school for the 2020-2021 school year. Specifically, elementary school principals will be sharing their information later today.  Our secondary school principals will be sharing their information on Friday, August 21.

In the meantime and for the sake of your time, we have created a webpage on our district website titled, “Reopening Central”.  Here you can find all the information contained within the 53 page (and growing) reopening plan.  The plan itself is also posted in its entirety on the site. This should make it easier for you to find things like school schedules, grading and attendance information and much, much more.

On behalf of our staff and board members, I thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenging times.

Stay safe, stay healthy and remember #togetherweRfife #Risforrelationships
