Superintendent's Message

Dear Fife School District Community,

As we begin the 2020-2021 school year I am grateful for your patience, trust, honesty and support.  While starting the school year remotely does bring many challenges, I am convinced that we will find the “silver linings” and grow exponentially from this remote learning modality.

This summer our staff worked diligently to cover as many logistics as they could when planning for the start of the year.  While we hope we have covered everything to ensure a smooth start to the year, the reality is this challenge brings many things to light on a daily basis. It is my hope that our school administrators and teachers have been successful in communicating with you in preparation for today. With that said, communication until we return to the classrooms needs to be two ways. We need parents and students to communicate with our teachers if they have needs, requests, situations that need assistance in navigating. As a staff, we are committed to keeping you informed, supporting your needs and preparing for the day when students are back in classrooms.  Which we hope is sooner rather than later, as long as it's safe to do so.

First and foremost, and as always, this year we will remain focused on our student’s whole child education. Yes, teaching and learning will look different to start the year but that doesn't mean we won't continue to strive for strong relationships, high levels of learning and a great learning experience for your children.

For the past 4 years we have used two “hashtags” in Fife; #togetherweRfife and #Risforrelationships. We mean it and this year more than ever, we are committed to it! We might lose some ‘in class’ learning experiences, we might not have all the extra and co-curricular activities and events, but we do have each other and we will make the most of every opportunity to stay together and develop strong, deep relationships.

Entering my 7th year as Superintendent and 23rd year overall in the district, I never could have guessed that we would have such an odd and all encompassing pandemic that has altered not only our educational lives, but our total way of life.  However, as this situation has developed, we have learned that we are capable of many things; things that make us better educators, better parents and hopefully better learners!

To close, I know that many of you want to know when we will start returning students and staff back to school. It’s a great question and one that depends on COVID case data from Tacoma Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD).  We will examine the data that TPCHD provides us weekly and adjust our learning modality accordingly.  You can count on ample communication from me and most importantly, your child’s teacher and principal. I hope to see you soon and until I do, please feel free to reach out to me or our wonderful staff members.

Cheers to a great school year!
