Fall Reopening Decision

Dear Fife Public School Families,

As is always the case in our schools, the first responsibility of our district is the health and safety of our students, families, and staff. This responsibility remained in March, 2020, when, along with all the districts in the region, we followed the guidance and requirements to close our buildings and move learning to an online model.  Since that time, especially during our summer months, we have been building a hybrid model of learning, again following the guidelines and requirements of the health care authorities.  We have secured PPE, we have studied a variety of schedule options, we have surveyed our families and staff to help guide our decisions.

As I’m sure you are aware, Pierce County Health issued new guidance and requirements late yesterday afternoon.

Part of Dr. Anthony Chen’s message states, “With all of this in mind, I issued this statement to school superintendents today: Based on the COVID-19 disease activity in Pierce County and our region, I do not feel it is safe to open schools in September for traditional classroom learning.

The situation could change, and I may change my recommendation at a later date. I am offering this recommendation at this time to respect our local school districts’ needs to plan and make decisions to have time to implement. Schools should still plan for onsite and hybrid models that districts could implement if the situation improves.”

As we have done with each new set of guidelines and requirements from the health care authorities, we will adhere to these new guidelines.

Our school year, which begins on September 3, 2020, will utilize a full, online model of learning.

We are grateful to have the time between now and then to work with our gifted educators and building leaders.  Our greatest strength as a district is our teachers. We know how to teach. We know our content areas and the needs of our students.  We learned a lot from Continuous Learning 1.0 this spring, both what worked and what didn’t work. We had a huge response from our families on that very topic.  We will now spend significant time studying best practices for online learning.  We can’t wait to get to work with the talented teachers in all of our schools.  Your child(ren) will still get to see, hear, and learn from Fife’s very best.  It will just look different for a while.

I am also the parent of a school-aged daughter.  I understand the stress this places on families.  I understand the challenges of job and home life.  I understand the challenges of childcare.  We are already working with partners to find all ways we can assist our families in each and every way possible.  We will share more on these important topics in the weeks to come.  Thank you for your continued support and patience.
