Important Information Regarding Current Air Quality in Our Region

posted Sep 6, 2017, 2:13 PM by Elaine Smith   [ updated Sep 6, 2017, 2:14 PM ]

The Air Quality Index in the Tacoma area was recently reported a 127, deeming it “unhealthy for sensitive groups” or USG.  The unsafe for sensitive groups is defined by the following:

“People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.”

Fife School District administrators will continue to respond to concerns on a case by case basis using recommendations for the health department.  Our coaches will also follow recommendations from Washington Department of Health.

  1. Recess - Keep students with asthma, respiratory infection, and lung or heart disease indoors.

  2. PE - Limit to light outdoor activities. Allow any student to stay indoors if they don’t want to go outside

  3. Outdoor Activities - Students with asthma, respiratory infection, lung and heart disease, or conditions like diabetes shouldn’t play outdoors.

  4. Students with Asthma should follow care plans.

Fife Public Schools is growing and wants your feedback as we consider future capital bond measures to ensure our students have room to learn in well-maintained buildings. We are seeking your thoughts on how to best prioritize our facility needs.

This online survey should take you 5-10 minutes to complete.  Your responses will be confidential. This survey will close on May 15. The survey can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/FifeSDSurvey

Fife Public Schools, like all school districts, relies on property taxes to fund maintenance and construction of school buildings. Since our last capital facility bond measure in 2000, student enrollment has grown by more than 35 percent.

If you are interested in helping the district prioritize our facility needs moving forward, please consider serving on our Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC). We are taking volunteer submissions until May 15. To apply, send an email with your contact information to CFAC@fifeschools.com .

Our district is proud to maintain one of the lowest tax rates in our region. As we look at our facility needs, with the help of our citizen task force, we will work hard to keep our tax rate low. For more information on our facility work, please visit http://bit.ly/FifeBond2018

Message Regarding Clowns

posted Oct 7, 2016, 11:06 AM by Elaine Smith   [ updated Oct 7, 2016, 11:06 AM ]

October 7, 2016

Dear Fife Families,

By now, most of you are aware of the social media fueled anxiety regarding “creepy clowns” and, while there have been incidents that have disrupted school operations in surrounding districts, we have not experienced similar incidents.

As always, we take our paramount duty seriously, ensuring the safety of our staff and students.  Working with Fife and Milton law enforcement, we will continue monitoring this situation.

We appreciate the support and communication we have with our community and parents. Parents can assist us by reminding your child(ren) about internet safety and appropriate use of social media.

To repeat, the safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority.  We have had no incidents, nor reports of ‘creepy clowns’, and our communication with our local law enforcement agencies is ongoing.

Thank you,

Kevin Alfano, Superintendent Fife Public Schools

SAFE DRINKING WATER IN FIFE SCHOOLS

posted May 26, 2016, 9:20 AM by Elaine Smith

There currently is no mandate for school districts to conduct testing for the presence of lead in drinking water at school facilities. In response to recent findings and concerns in other school districts in our area, Fife School District tested water for lead in all our buildings. Samples were taken from a cross section of sources of drinking and cooking water at all Fife School District locations on May 12 & 13, 2016. Results of testing of those samples was received from the certified and accredited testing laboratory on May 20, 2016.

The Washington State Department of Health recommended "take action" level for lead in drinking water is 20 parts per billion. EPA recommends “take action” at 15 ppb for public water suppliers. In light of recent concerns, some school districts have adopted the lower limit out of an abundance of caution.

Of the samples drawn from district faucets, drinking fountains, sinks, and classroom “bubblers”, none of those samples showed test results at or close to either of the "take action" levels. The summary report is available for viewing via the link below.

While Fife School District is pleased with these initial results, a plan is being developed for additional future routine testing to continue to ensure that our drinking water is safe for all.

If you have any questions, please contact Dan Lea, Manager of Maintenance and Operations at (253) 517-1000.
